IG demands new strategies to tackle Jos crisis

Abubakar gave the directive in Abuja on Wednesday during a meeting with senior police officers.
He directed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police Zone 4, Mr. Mike Zuokumor, and the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Mr Emmanuel Ayeni, to work out and submit the strategies to him on August 14.
Abubakar said, “Internal security is our core mandate. We must utilse our close affinity with local communities and stakeholders to intervene meaningfully in conflicts and restore calm to troubled areas of the country.
“The AIG and the commissioner should immediately initiate efforts targeted at restructuring and evolving effective security strategies to address the security challenges in Plateau.
“You must let me know before the close of work on August 14 what new things we must do to restore permanent calm to Plateau.”
The IG said the strategies must show practical and realistic solutions as well as specific and holistic designs on short, medium and long term solutions.
According to him, the Jos crisis is a problem that must be solved.
The IG ordered policemen deployed in crisis-prone areas of the state to gear up to the challenges and restore order as soon as possible.
Abubakar also directed policemen to step up crime prevention strategies nationwide, adding that they should constantly review such strategies as criminals evolve new methods.
He said, “I will not take kindly to any commissioner of police who sticks to traditional policing methodologies.
“Neither will I tolerate lukewarm attitude, docility, incompetence and lack of capacity to drive the reform agenda of this administration by any commissioner of police.”
Abubakar said there should be a change from the old ways of policing, to serving the people with respect in line with the provisions of the law.
He said with the lifting of the state of emergency in 15 local government areas in four northern states, there was a need to ensure that the fragile peace in the areas was sustained and improved upon.
He added, “I urge the AIG and CPs in these states to work assiduously with other sister security agencies to ensure that the residents go about their lawful business without let or hindrance.”
The IG directed that policemen should must be paid before the last week of every month for enhanced performance.
