BOKO HARAM: Abuja Attack, SSS Lied?

The Department of State Services has issued a statement, claiming that the sustained gun battle around its headquarters and the vicinity of the presidential villa this morning began after a detainee disarmed an operative and tried to effect a jailbreak.

“At 0715 hours, the Service suspect handler went to the detention facility within the Headquarters to feed the suspects,” the SSS spokesperson, Marilyn Ogar, said in the statement. “One of the suspects attempted to disarm him by hitting him at the back of his head with his handcuff. His attempt to escape drew the attention of other guards at the facility who fired some shots to warn and deter others.

“The gun shots attracted the attention of the military with whom we have an understanding of mutual assistance in the event of any threat. The Army immediately deployed a team to reinforce our perimeter guards to forestall any external collaborators. The situation has since been brought under control.”

But knowledgeable security sources are telling PREMIUM TIMES that the SSS narrative begs further questions because they are “untrue and misleading”.

The sources frame their doubts around the presumed impenetrability of the DSS facility and headquarters; the unusually huge military intervention force; the quality of ordinance deployed; and the prolonged period of gun exchange.

“The truth is that a jailbreak is impossible in the SSS headquarters,” one of our sources said.”It has two fences and it is highly fortified. And there is no way a man on handcuff could launch an attack vicious enough to disarm an operative.

“Also our people need to tell the world whether it was only one gun taken from the disarmed operative that the detainees used in engaging soldiers and SSS operatives in sustained gun battle for about three hours.

“If it is about subduing one man who attempted a jailbreak, why did we need truckloads of fully armed soldiers and deployment of Armoured Personnel Carriers, RPGs and other sophisticated weapons?

“Also, why did the exchange of fire lasted for so long? Why did we have to deploy helicopter gunships to hover around the villa and Yellow House (SSS headquarters).

“Nigerians should demand the truth. I can tell you that a more serious incident happened than our people are willing to admit and there is a serious attempt at cover-up.”

Some residents of the area also believe what happened could not have been just an attempted jailbreak.

“Whatever this is, it appears more serious than an attempted jailbreak claimed by the SSS,” former Minister Nasir El-Rufai, who live a few metres away from the SSS headquarters said. “May God Protect the innocent and destroy the murderers, kidnappers and planners of genocide, Amen.”

Another former minister, whose home neighboured the SSS headquarters, Femi Fani-Kayode said,”I live 50 metres away from the SSS headquarters and the Villa and what I witnessed with my eyes and heard this morning was a full scale battle.”

The entire vicinity of the presidential palace and the SSS headquarters has been cordoned off, making it impossible for journalists to do area assessment with a view to determining what actually happened.

SUPER EAGLES: Am Building A Strong Team - Stephen Keshi

Stephen Keshi
Stephen Keshi
Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi who came under fire for shunning a meeting with the Nigeria Football Federation technical committee for a function in Lagos, has stated that he was more concerned about building a solid team that will represent Nigeria at the 2014 World Cup and would not be drawn into any controversy with his employers.
The NFF on Thursday issued Keshi a query, but in a chat with super-sports.com, the former Super Eagles captain declared that he will not say a word concerning the issue at the moment.
“I don’t really want to comment on this because a lot of people will misinterpret what I will say. Let them (NFF) accuse me of everything, I really don’t care.
“I want to concentrate on my job of building a strong team. That’s the most important thing.
“I pray that the work I have been doing to build a strong Nigerian team for the World Cup comes out well because it will also be great for Africa.
“I will not say anything about the query but when it gets to a point, I will say something.
“Right now, I will be quiet but when I am ready to talk, you will be the first to hear,” Keshi said.
This stance by Keshi is bound to stoke the fire of a frosty relationship between the coach and the NFF. There has been no love lost between the federation the coach since he temporarily quit the national team after winning the nations cup in South Africa and accusing the NFF of not paying his salary for six months.
Keshi said that he was looking to prepare his team in peace and harmony adding that distractions such as these will put the spanner in the works. He also prayed that the players and the coaches are not owed their entitlements.

2015 ELECTION: APC, A Party Of Unpatriotic Nigerians?

The ruling Peoples Democratic Party has described the All Progressives Congress as party of unpatriotic Nigerians.
The party said it had observed the alleged ill-conceived and wicked offensive deployed by the APC and that the opposition has now resorted to attacking the personality of individuals and institutions of government using a section of the media.
A statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh in Abuja on Sunday, alleged that the APC had been using resources meant for the development of their states to castigate, discredit and ridicule PDP officials and other well-meaning individuals in the country.
In response, the APC dismissed PDP’s claims saying the ruling party was a party of drowning politicians clinging to straws.
Metuh said that it was rather despicable that instead of coming out with tangible explanations that would delink it from the negatives for which he said Nigerians have known the APC, he added that the opposition party had resorted to what he described as “yet another diversionary tactics of propaganda, blackmail and falsehood, this time, using paid consultants masquerading as newspaper columnists to attack and insult individuals including the person of President Goodluck Jonathan.
“We however wish to restate that the PDP is not perturbed by these attacks and they cannot deter us from exposing the APC. We completely stand by our position that the APC is a party of unpatriotic persons whose agenda is to destroy our democracy and the unity we enjoy as a nation.
“This wave of attack is clearly part of APC’s ‘Janjaweed ‘ ideology of destruction and inciting the people against individuals, especially government officials, in furtherance of the plot to undermine the system and balkanize the nation along ethnic and religious lines ahead of the 2015 general elections; an agenda which has already failed.”
He added that he was aware that the APC has engaged the services of foreigners who he said have been brought into the country to do the hatchet job in collaboration with the paid consultants who he said pocket as much as N5 million naira for each negative publication.
Metuh said, “Nigerians must insist that the APC declares the source of the billions of naira with which it is sponsoring the negative publications.
“We must ensure that the funds are not coming from the resources meant for the development of their states where the people are already subjected to untold hardship on account of the looting and heavy taxes by the APC.
“As an ill-bred party, it is not surprising that the APC has continued to exhibit crass hatred for the President even to the extent of unleashing their thugs to attack innocent citizens for the singular reason of being in possession of posters of President Goodluck Jonathan.”
He said Nigerians are now aware that the APC is a party of hypocrites; of wolves in messianic robes seeking to deceive with the promise of change. We wish to state categorically that the APC as presently constituted has nothing to offer.
He added that by every indication, the APC is a rudderless ship heading for crisis and self destruction.
Metuh urged Nigerians to note that whilst the leaders of the APC have continued to focus on attacking people and causing confusion, the PDP has focused on sensitizing the people as well as strengthening and expanding its support base.
Reacting to Metuh, his counterpart in the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said the PDP had better address issues instead of beating around the bush.
He told one of our correspondents in a telephone interview that there was nothing the APC has said about the PDP that was untrue.
Mohammed said, “Every advert we have put out, I signed them. We have run only two adverts so far, one on the allegation of corruption of millions of dollars and the other one on the incompetence regarding the recruitment into the Nigeria Immigration Service.
“I don’t see that as character assassination, I don’t see that as insulting personalities, we have just put the facts in the public domain, they should reply Nigerians.
“It is not true that people died in the NIS recruitment? Is it not true that they collected N1, 000 from each of the applicants? Let them go and face their challenges.”
He dismissed allegations that state resources were used in placing adverts. Mohammed said the APC is an organised and accountable political party unlike the ruling party.

FUEL SCARCITY: No End In Sight?

The erratic supply of fuel across the country may worsen in coming weeks if the leadership crisis in the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria degenerates further.
Just last Friday, the crisis in IPMAN warranted the shutdown of operations of the Nigerian Independent Petroleum Company by the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, sources in the sector alleged.
Our correspondent also gathered that some marketers that kicked against Mr. Aminu Abdulkadir, the association’s president whose tenure was recently terminated by a High Court judgment, were denied product.
The development, it was learnt had further intensified fuel scarcity in the affected regions, especially in eastern Nigeria.
A Federal High Court ruling in Port Harcourt delivered by Justice Lambo Akanbi, had declared Mr. Obasi Lawson as IPMAN’s president. The court also put aside the constitution of the association that was spearheaded by Abdulkadir.
However, Lawson and Abdulkadir are currently operating as presidents of the association, as both gave instructions to loyal members.
This, our correspondent gathered, has factionalised the largest petrol distributors association in the country.
The court-installed president, Lawson, told our correspondent that many petrol stations that lack product were IPMAN members who opposed the reign of Abdulkadir after being sacked by the court.
Although Lawson said the situation was being addressed, he admitted that fuel scarcity in some parts of the country was due to the shutdown of these affected stations.
He said, “Many of the stations without fuel across states in the country are members who kicked against the policies of Abdulkadir and this is another problem that is warranting product scarcity. You can go and find out. In fact some of my members are selling their stations.
“This is especially in places where we don’t have the pronounced presence of major marketers. He (Abdulkadir) designed a way to impoverish some marketers and by extension Nigerians who get supply from these marketers. But as president of the association, I am working hard to address this.”
Lawson explained that the crisis in the association had been on for a very long time and stressed that stakeholders came up with a Memorandum of Understanding in order to put an end to the leadership tussle.
He added, “But Abdulkadir did not honour any of the agreements in the MoU. He only picked the one that favoured him, which is to be the president. He was challenged and the court ruling ordered him to step aside and based on the succession plan in our original constitution, the court declared me president.”
But Abdulkadir stated that the judgment had been appealed and warned that the crisis, if not addressed, may further worsen the already erratic supply of fuel in Nigeria.
According to him, unsuspecting members of the association may decide not to lift product until the leadership tussle is checked, stressing that this may cause further hardship on the Nigerian masses.
Abdulkadir’s views were however countered by Lawson, who argued that his members would continue lifting product and assured that he would do everything possible to ensure seamless supply of fuel nationwide.

HORROR: Mallam Nabbed Slaughtering Girl?

A 37-year-old muslim cleric, Isah Salaudeen was caught on Thursday night trying to slaughter a young girl, Chiwendu Nkwocha who had gone to him for spiritual help in Ibadan.
According to report, the victim, Nkwocha was brought to Salaudeen by her boyfriend, Bola, in January this year so that he would help in using prayers and other means to exorcise some spirits troubling her and she had been undergoing this ‘spiritual cleansing’ by being given herbs, concoctions and ‘holy water’ to cure her.
On that fateful day, Salaudeen had asked the victim to lie down while he covered her face with a cloth. She suddenly felt a sharp pain on her throat and before she knew what was happening, the cleric reportedly attempted to hack her with a cutlass to make his work faster when it seemed the knife was not achieving the aim intended. She then screamed, jumped up from where she was lying and ran out for help.
The incident was said to have been reported by one Aafa Taiye Agulofi and Ademola Agoro who resides in the same area with the suspect.
Salaudeen when apprehended, denied trying to deliberately kill the lady, saying he did not know what came over him. He said he believed he was manipulated by the spirits troubling Nkwocha to commit the criminal act and that he came to his senses later on.
“I am a Muslim cleric and will never do rituals. Even I have self-discipline so much that I don’t have girlfriend or go to prostitutes since my wife and I divorced. If I feel like having sex, I just masturbate until I (ejaculate). Divine (Nkwocha) used to play hard and was also staying with me; that was why I had sex with her,” Salaudeen said.
Salaudeen, is currently being held at the Iyaganku Division of Oyo State Police Command while Nkwocha is said to be receiving treatment at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
The spokesperson for the Oyo State police command, Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, a Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident, saying that the suspect would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan, for further investigations.

Boko Haram suspect battles DSS in Abuja

An attempt by a Boko Haram suspect in detention at the headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS), in Abuja to disarm a security operative on Sunday morning led to heavy shooting from within the heavily fortified premises that sent panic waves within the federal Capital territory.
Several security sources in Abuja told Vanguard the incidence did not pose any challenge to the security of the federal Capital but it was a reaction by the security operatives to send a message that they were ready to confront any threat.
The Department of State Services (DSS), headquarters is less than one hundred metres from the Presidential Villa.
According to a high ranking security official, a Boko Haram suspect in detention at the SSS headquarters attempted to disarm a security operative sunday Morning when they were being served breakfast.
“Of course our men are trained to expect such scenario and the attempt was effectively neutralized. As a precaution and to send a strong message, our boys released some shots to indicate that they were ready to confront any eventuality. There is no cause for alarm and there is no threat to the peace of Abuja” the source who declined to be named told Vanguard.

Samsung 'puzzled' by early S5 smartphone launch

Samsung Galaxy S5
Samsung Galaxy S5 The early sales are helping Korean operators get round government restrictions

Mobile operators in South Korea have started selling Samsung's flagship Galaxy S5 phone three weeks early.

Due to go on sale on 11 April in South Korea, the S5 is already available from three operators, including the country's biggest network.

The three are selling the phone now to get round government restrictions on to whom they can sell new handsets.

Samsung said it was "very puzzled" by the operators' actions and was deciding how to respond.

SK Telecom, KT Corp and LG Uplus have all been able to start selling the S5 because Samsung has already shipped large numbers of the handset to them prior to the official launch.

Many Korean mobile firms are facing a ban on signing up new customers, imposed by the country's telecommunications regulator. The operators are being punished for using illegal subsidies to attract new customers.

The ban on SK Telecom, the country's biggest operator, comes into force on 5 April and lasts for 45 days. Selling the S5 now means it can make up some of the sales it would lose if it waited until the ban expires - well after the official S5 launch date.

KT Corp and LG Uplus are already subject to restrictions that limit to whom they can sell phones. In reaction, the operators are selling the phone to those customers not covered by the restrictions.

The Galaxy S5 was launched at the Mobile World Congress show held in Barcelona late last month. Samsung said the early sales of the S5 in Korea would not affect launch dates for the phone elsewhere in the world.

Facebook to buy virtual reality firm Oculus VR for $2 billion - That's Cheap

Punch a shark with the Oculus Rift

Facebook's $2 billion purchase of virtual reality gaming company Oculus may seem peculiar and overly expensive, but the deal actually makes a lot of sense for both companies.

For Facebook (FB, Fortune 500), buying Oculus was an opportunity to expand beyond its core business. Oculus' virtual reality headset is in a growing category of wearable technology that many industry experts expect to be the Next Big Thing. If that pans out, that's $2 billion well spent.

For Oculus, Facebook provides the company with much-needed speed.

Oculus CEO Palmer Luckey wasted no time on a conference call with analysts on Monday in mentioning the access to resources that Facebook could provide. The deal would allow Oculus to build better hardware faster and cheaper.

And really, that's what this allegiance is about: racing to be the first to plant the flag in virtual moondust.

A single announcement -- Sony's announcement of the Project Morpheus virtual reality headset two weeks ago -- almost certainly accelerated whatever plans Oculus and Facebook had for the virtual reality space. The Facebook-Oculus deal is widely reported to have come together in just a matter of days.

Sony (SNE) poses a big threat to Oculus, because the technology giant has everything Oculus did not: financial resources, manufacturing and retail channels, and a PlayStation gaming platform that is mature and successful.

Until selling the company to Facebook, Oculus hadn't been in any real rush to hit store shelves. At last year's E3 video game expo, Oculus mentioned that it was intently focused on getting the technology and the platform right before even thinking about putting its product in consumers' hands. The only people using Oculus today are developers, engineers and tinkerers who supported the company's Kickstarter crowdfunding project.

Left undisturbed, Oculus likely could have held out much longer before selling -- perhaps for a lot more money than $2 billion. Though the young company fetched a nice sum from Facebook, Oculus is among the most innovative gadget makers in the $100 billion video game industry. Oculus isn't the biggest company in the virtual reality space, but it has the best, boldest ideas and people.

Oculus' virtual reality technology has enormous potential. One day, sports fans could immerse themselves into games, and video conferencing could become virtual conferencing. Movies could become interactive -- turning your head could affect the outcome of the plot. And a trip to the doctor for a minor illness could be carried out from the comfort of your own living room.

Of course, this could all go wrong. The technology could hit a wall and never deliver on its promise.

Already, there has been some backlash to its decision to sell to Facebook. Markus Persson, the creator of successful video game franchise Minecraft, canceled plans for a VR version of his breakout game. Elsewhere around the internet, you can find plenty of disgruntled gamers who are wary of Facebook's motives.

But it was clear that Oculus was going to have a hard time waging this war alone, and the only way to determine the extent of its potential was to join a much larger federation.

Facebook and Google in tech cold war

Facebook and Google are spending billions of dollars to ensure that they remain relevant in the rapidly changing technology landscape.
google facebook cold war
Facebook and Google are locked in a high-stakes, multi-billion dollar battle to shape the future.

Both companies are spending like crazy on emerging technologies. Their aims: when their current businesses are disrupted -- and they will be -- they'll have a fallback plan.

"While Facebook is doing well now, it knows that its core business could degrade just as MySpace's did," said Carl Howe, analyst at Yankee Group.

That's why Facebook (FB, Fortune 500) has poured billions of dollars into a photo sharing network, facial recognition software, a chat app and now virtual reality company Oculus. Google (GOOG, Fortune 500), in turn, has invested billions in driverless cars, wearable gadgets, military robots and -- most recently through its purchase of Nest -- connected home devices like smoke detectors and thermostats.

It's as if Facebook and Google are now combatants in Silicon Valley's version of a Cold War arms race.

"Facebook and Google are high technology titans engaged in a real world game of 'Monopoly' to grab the choicest technology properties in a bid to maintain and extend their dominance with each other as well and various other rivals," said Laura DiDio principal analyst at consultancy ITIC.

These are long-term bets. For all their attempts to diversify, neither company's purchases have helped them expand beyond their core business models just yet. Both Google and Facebook generated about 90% of their revenue from advertising last year.

By buying Oculus, Facebook is betting that the next tech wave could be ruled by wearable devices. Google is making a similar bet with Glass and its Android Wear smartwatch platform.

Punch a shark with the Oculus Rift
Punch a shark with the Oculus Rift
The big question is whether Facebook bought the right wearable company.

Mark Zuckerberg said on a conference call with analysts Tuesday that he believes virtual reality has a chance to become the communications platform of the future.

But Oculus is unlike most wearable devices -- it is closed off from the rest of the world, taking over most of your senses, including your entire field of vision. That's great for gaming but it's not like we're going to be able to walk down the street with these things as we do today with smartphones and could even do one day with smartwatches and Google Glass.

"Oculus has a lot of cool, very immersive applications," said Ron Gruia, principal consultant at Frost & Sullivan. "At the same time, Oculus is very isolating, limiting its usefulness."

Even if it doesn't succeed, the bet seems to be worth it for Facebook. The company spent $2 billion on Oculus but only $400 million in cash -- loose change for a company with $11.5 billion in its corporate coffers.

But in the emerging Cold War between Facebook and Google, Facebook can't take quite as many risks. Google has $59 billion in cash and can lose a bet every once in a while, as it did with Motorola Mobility. (Google bought Motorola for $12.5 billion in 2011 but subsequently shed most of the assets, including the recent sale of Motorola's smartphone business to Lenovo for about $3 billion.)

Google's mission of cataloging information is also broader than Facebook's "connecting people" goal. So while Facebook can make wild bets like it is with Oculus, it has less wiggle room than Google in ensuring they pay off. Investors showed their disapproval on Wednesday as well. Shares of Facebook were down more than 3%.

But give both companies credit for knowing they can't rest on their laurels. Google CEO Larry Page and Facebook's Zuckerberg seem to recognize that it's not easy to stay on top of the tech world forever.

Numerous firms that were once industry titans fell to Earth after they failed to adapt to a new wave of technology. In fact, both companies literally have their headquarters in the graveyard of former tech darlings.

Facebook's Menlo Park offices are in the former home of Sun Microsystems, which Oracle (ORCL, Fortune 500) snapped up in 2010. And Google lives in the former headquarters of Silicon Graphics Inc. -- the once-mighty computing company that filed for bankruptcy in 2009.

HTC One M8: The most beautiful smartphone

HTC has introduced a successor to last year's beautifully-designed HTC One smartphone, this time with a bigger screen, an improved camera and an even sleeker design.

Dubbed the HTC One M8, the smartphone is slightly wider and heavier than last year's model, but not so much so that it detracts from the experience of using the phone. The HTC One M8 is slightly bigger to accomodate a larger, five-inch screen.

Like Samsung's (SSNLF) Galaxy S5, which was announced in February, the phone has the latest quad-core Snapdragon processor running at 2.3 GHz. It also comes with 2 GB of RAM, ensuring it will remain one of the most powerful Android phones available this year.

Similar to last year's Moto X, the M8 features many low-powered sensors, including an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, and a touch screen sensor. These let you unlock the phone by tapping the screen twice, or letting apps, such as the FitBit app, access that data to determine how active you've been -- all without killing your battery.

As far as the camera goes, the sensor in the M8 makes use of the same 4-megapixel UltraPixel technology that was found in last year's HTC One. But this time around, it comes with a second camera that collects additional depth data on each image.

HTC claims that the M8's second camera give users the ability to refocus any photo you take. That's close to the truth but not quite accurate -- in reality, the dual-camera setup lets you add a powerful blur effect, or other special effects, to select parts of the image while leaving the rest untouched.

That feature works best in a shot where everything is in focus and you want to emphasize a particular person or object. But if an object is already blurred in the image (intentionally or not), the M8 camera would not give you the ability to pull it into focus.

A number of tweaks have also been made to HTC's customized Sense UI, which turns Google's (GOOG, Fortune 500) Android software into an experience heavily focused on delivering news and social media updates to your home screen. Users how have the ability to set up custom feeds based on search terms. And depending on how many developers support the feature, the new Sense UI will have the ability to integrate notifications from other Android apps into the feed (Foursquare restaurant recommendations are one such example).

But really, the jewel of this year's HTC One M8 seems to be the same thing that made last year's HTC One so good: the design. Last year's phone was beautiful, and this year's matches -- if not improves upon -- the quality of last year's design. It's attractive, solid as a tank, and is more comfortable to hold, thanks to the rounded edges on the back half of the phone. The only downside is that the extra width makes one-handed use a bit more tricky.

The HTC One M8 is available on all four major U.S. carriers starting Tuesday if you order online. It retails for $200 with a new, two-year contract, or $600 off-contract. If you want to pick one up in the store, however, you'll have to wait until April 10.

Microsoft unveils iPad Office suite

BBC's Richard Taylor takes a first look at Office for iPad

Microsoft has started offering an iPad edition of its Office software suite.
It was announced at the first launch event hosted by Satya Nadella since he became chief executive of the firm.
Three separate productivity apps are available - Word, Excel and Powerpoint - each of which has been optimised for touch-based controls, making them easier to use than the web-based alternatives provided before.
The firm has faced criticism for not offering the software until now.
Mr Nadella said that the announcement was part of a strategy to empower people "to be productive across all devices" with Microsoft software.
Satya Nadella
Microsoft's new chief presented his first launch in San Francisco
"We are taking great focus and great care to make sure Office on any device shines through," he said, indicating that his firm would release versions of the apps for other mobile devices in the future.

App rivals
Office remains Microsoft's cash cow, accounting for $16.2bn (£9.7bn) - or just over 60% - of Microsoft's operating profit in its last financial year. But some believe that sum could have been larger.
"It was definitely a major mistake to wait - an example of the insular old-world thinking of Steve Ballmer and his management team that believed everything should be within a Windows ecosystem," said Chris Green, from the Davies Murphy Group consultancy.
"In today's multi-device environment, where Windows is no longer the all dominant platform it once was, that game plan doesn't work anymore. The fact Microsoft is now catching up is only going to be a good thing and will be to the benefit of the Office applications."
The iPhone version has attracted a relatively low review score from Apple's App Store users, many of whom complained about its cost - it required an Office 365 subscription sold for £80 a year - and missing features.
Meanwhile other apps - including Documents to Go, HopTo, Quickoffice, Google's business web apps and Apple's iWork suite - have prospered offering free or cheaper alternatives that can load and alter files originally created by Office.

INTERESTING: FRSC’s New Number Plates Is Illegal?

The threat by the respondent to impound vehicles and arrest motorists who failed to comply with the October 1 deadline, is illegal, the court ruled.
The new number plates introduced by the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, is unconstitutional, a Federal High Court in Lagos said on Wednesday.
Delivering judgment in a suit filed by Emmanuel Ofoegbu, a lawyer, against the FRSC, the judge said that it was unlawful for the commission to impose the new number plates on Nigerians, where no existing law permitted it.
“The issue of redesigning new number plates by the respondent, is not covered under the provisions of any law in Nigeria,” said James Tsoho, the judge.
“The respondent (FRSC) cannot force Nigerians to acquire new plate numbers by impounding cars, without the backing of any legislation to that effect.
“I hold that the act of the respondent amounts to an arbitrary use of power, and is therefore illegal and unconstitutional.
“Judgment is therefore entered in favour of the plaintiff, and all the reliefs sought is hereby granted, I so hold,” the judge added.
Mr. Ofoegbu filed the suit on September 30, 2013, through a Human Rights Activists, Ogedi Ogu, challenging the power of the FRSC to impound vehicles of motorists who failed to acquire the new numbers.
Mr. Ofoegbu had sought a declaration that the threat by the FRSC to impound vehicles of motorists, who failed to acquire the new number plates, was invalid and unconstitutional.
In his statement of facts, the plaintiff averred that the old plate numbers were issued under the provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR) 2004.
He averred that the NRTR 2004, is a subsidiary legislation made under the FRSC Act, Laws of the Federation as revised in 2004.
According to the plaintiff, the NRTR 2012, in Regulations 230 (2), provides that “the revocation of the 2004 Regulations, shall not affect anything done, or purported to be done pursuant to that Regulation”
Mr. Ofoegbu stated that there is no law made in accordance with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which prohibits the use of the old plate numbers, or declares its use as an offence.
He also said that the threat by the respondent to impound vehicles and arrest motorists who failed to comply with the October 1 deadline, was a gross violation of the provisions of 36 (12) of the constitution which guarantees the rights of individuals.
He, therefore, urged the court to declare as unlawful, the threat by the respondent, to arrest motorists using the old plate numbers, because there is no law validly made in accordance with the constitution, prohibiting its user.

The applicant had also sought an order of injunction restraining the defendants from impounding vehicles or otherwise arresting or harassing motorists who failed to acquire the new plate number.

According to MDB
Just less than a week after the Soka Ritual Factory was discovered, two ritualists have today been discovered, in different areas in the same Ibadan.

An MDB reader who was present as the first location where the ritualist was paraded took the pic above and those after the cut. He also explained how the young man, yet to be identified met his water-loo today 25th March 2014.
The photos after the cut are very graphic, Viewer discretion is highly advised. According to the MDB ireporter, the incident happened at Adebayo Hospital Road, off Ring Road, Ibadan.

The young man in question is said to have paraded the area for sometime now as a mad man, and was well known. However, his cover blew when a resident noticed an expensive blackberry phone with him, and raised alarm, indicating that there was more to the mentally deranged man than meets the eye.
As a result, residents apprehended the young man in question. He was searched and an ID card, identifying him as a student of Olabisi Onabanjo University was found on him. What raised more suspicion however was that he had with him two expensive blackberry phones, and another expensive phone. They also found with him a list, which after been tortured he confessed were his clients whom he sold human parts to.
As expected the crowd descended mercilessly on him. He was about to be set ablaze when the police arrived and took him away.
See more photos and the video below:

eLearning Africa 2014 : ICT Supported Learning Holds a Great Future for Africa

elearning Africa 2014

More than ever before, Africans are turning to ICT-supported learning to grow their economies. In 2013, the eLearning Africa Report found that 40% of African technology-assisted learning professionals were using ICTs specifically for skills
training, up from 18% the previous year.

The benefit of ICT-supported learning is that it allows employers to provide vocational training to a great number of workers for little cost. This year’seLearning Africa, 28th – 30th May in Kampala, Uganda, will explore how technology
is revolutionising learning and training across the continent, under the theme”Opening Frontiers to the Future”.

“Many African countries are seeking to diversify their economies and stimulate sectors such as tourism and finance, but skills shortages are preventing them from doing so”, says Rebecca Stromeyer, founder of eLearning Africa. “eLearning will
allow more and more African countries to easily train the next generation of in-demand workers”.

Innovative people and organisations across the Continent are working to fill in this‘skills-gap’. Leading this movement is LEAP Africa, which has equipped over 30,000 youth, business owners and professionals to lead positive change in their personal lives, business ventures and local communities. Iyadunni Olubode, Executive Director
of LEAP, and keynote speaker at eLearning Africa 2014, emphasises the role that using technology to support learning can play: “eLearning tools, including audio and video, are critical in reaching the Continent’s teeming population”.

Dr Bitange Ndemo, former Permanent Secretary of Kenya’s Ministry of Information and Communication and an eLearning Africa 2014 keynote speaker, believes that vocational skills often do not receive the recognition they deserve: “We have spent many years trying to focus on theory and hoping that it will translate to skills. This is a false belief. Countries that are successful have a strong skills development programme. In Kenya whilst there are many jobs, there is widespread unemployment because the youth lack the skills. This problem can be solved if on-line content in all trades, including soft skills, is widely accessible. Many youth are known to shun vocational training in favour of nonexistent white collar jobs. There is need to encourage the youth to take up blue collar skills that offer many opportunities for training”.
eLearning Africa 2014 will bring together policy experts, educational professionals and business leaders to tackle this and other topics. Hosted by the Republic of Uganda, the conference’s wide-ranging plenaries, sessions and exhibitions will
showcase the inspiring stories, innovations and research that make up today’s complex picture of ICT for development, education and training in Africa.

Renowned for its vibrant, stimulating atmosphere, eLearning Africa is the place to discuss Africa’s exciting future. This year’s conference will bring together more than 1,500 technology and education professionals.

BOKO HARAM: MEND Is A Sponsor - Sheikh Gumi

Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Mahmud Gumi, Kaduna-based renowned Islamic preacher, has spoken on the current hardships Nigeria is facing.
He took his Facebook account to spread the message and even to name those responsible.
Before announcing his accusations, Sheikh Gumi mourned the deaths of those who lost their lives “just looking for a job”.
“If educated youth cannot get a job, businesses are collapsing and closing, those that have no access to any governmental amenities – electricity, tap water, hospitals, fertilisers, etc are more apt to be poorer. So who is that rich enough to sponsor ‘gunmen’ or ‘herdsmen’ or BH to be rampaging the innocent villages both Muslims and Christians in the north? Men over hundred riding motorcycles carrying AK47s ravaging communities with impunity. I know only one terrorist organization that is rich enough to sponsor mercenaries to do this dirty work. The M.E.N.D.
1. They have the venom of hatred for all Nigerians especially the north.
2. Their so called ‘ex members’ are enjoying government patronage making millions ‘guarding’ oil pipelines.
3. They have declared GEJ must continue over hell will loose on Nigerians.
4. Theirs misguided provocative statements are met with state silence or even protection. I never heard Abati rebutting Asari. Birds of the same feathers?
Only a dumb person will be then looking for the financial source of these mayhems.

WARNING: Energy Drink Is Dangerous - NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control on Sunday warned the public against indiscriminate consumption of energy drink for health reasons.
Mrs Adeline Osakwe, Director, Pharmacovigilance and Post Market Surveillance Directorate of the agency, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.
According to her, energy drinks are supplements that contained high caffeine and carbohydrate which are made to make a person hyper active.
“The effect of the caffeine in energy drink makes people to get high, to be stimulated and of course, it makes the person’s heart to beat faster.
“It can have adverse effects, especially when the person over uses them and it accumulates in the system. The caffeine in it can lead to increase in blood pressure.
“It stimulates the heart to the extent that it worsens heart disease condition; energy drink should not be used like drinking water”, she warned.
The director said energy drinks were mostly recommended for sports people when it was necessary to boost their energy after or before sport.
She said energy drink had not been considered as narcotic or hard drug because it only contained caffeine and its effects could be controlled.
Osakwe promised that the agency would intensify its awareness and enlightenment campaign on consumption of the product, advising that children should not be given energy drink.
She warned against drug abuse, stressing that many people had abused cough syrups which contained codeine.
Osakwe assured of the commitment of NAFDAC to safeguard health of Nigerians and urged the public to support the agency in achieving its mandates.

INTERESTING: Nigerians Are Corrupt - Robert Mugabe

President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, has taken a swipe on Nigeria, labeling the country and her citizens as corrupt. He made the remark during his 90th birthday luncheon hosted by the service chiefs and the public commission.
Mugabe said Zimbabweans are now almost behaving like Nigerians who have to be corruptly paid for every service.
“Are we now like Nigeria where you have to reach your pocket to get anything done,” he said. “You see we used to go to Nigeria and every time we went there we had to carry extra cash in our pockets to corruptly pay for everything. You get into a plane in Nigeria and you sit there and the crew keeps dilly dulling without taking off as they wait for you to pay them to fly the plane,” said the president followed by a huge laugh from the delegates attending his birthday bash.
The current corruption rankings in the world rank Zimbabwe’s corruption a lot worse than Nigeria. Nigeria is ranked 163 worst corrupt country in the world while Zimbabwe is an embarrassing 170 third from the bottom.
The report was carried by Bulawayo24 News, based in Zimbabwe.

NUDE PHOTO: Biola Ige Speaks

Few days ago, a photo of Nollywood Actress, Biola Ige, and Actor, Muna Obiekwe, went viral on the internet.
The two Actors – Bola and Muna – were in a compromising position as the latter held and kissed the former’s boobs.
Reacting to the controversy the photo has since generated, the Actress who appears to be unperturbed by the picture, released a press statement today.’
See excerpts from the press statement below:
“I was going to remain silent on the photo being displayed on the internet, however, I realize that I need to set the record straight for my family, friends and fans who I love and respect.
The photo in question was taking from the set of a movie called “Pregnant Hawkers” in which i played a Hawker who was in a romantic situation with a man (The actor in the photo). This movie was shot and aired two years ago. The photo circulating the internet right now is the photo from a scene in the movie and nothing more. IF you watched the movie you will see that there is nothing to this movie other than the fact that i was playing a role! Continue…
I am an Actress, it is a profession that I love and will continue to enjoy. I am required to play all sorts of roles. In each role, I step out of being Biola Ige and go straight into ‘character’.
Whoever maliciously leaked this photo to make it appear to be something else has simply given me some great publicity! Thank you!
I have been through a lot of difficult things this year with the loss of my mom and a brief illness. That simple photo from a movie scene from 2 years ago is the least of my worries. I have no further comments regarding this act to hurt my character.
I look forward to acting more movies, and playing more roles to entertain you.
Thank you all for reading.
