TRAGIC: Mother Commits Suicide, Leaves Six Month Old Baby Behind?
What could have prompted a 37-year-old mother of two to take her life six days after given birth to a new baby?
This is the question begging for an answer in Kogi State, as the
woman who was simply called by her neighbour as Mama Debora, reportedly
left her room on that fateful night to ease herself but never come back.
The incident which took place at Ganaja village in Lokoja, the state
capital.
Our source revealed that the husband of the deceased decided to look
for her, when the new born baby started crying ceaselessly without
attention.
It was at this stage that he discovered his wife was hanging onto a
protruding iron, from the ceiling of their house using fishing net.
Investigations by our reporter, revealed that the deceased had been
threatening several times to commit suicide at every slight provocation
from her husband.
The incident came after she picked a quarrel with her husband and
refused to go into the room until she was persuaded by the people living
around, before she went inside to sleep.
It was also revealed that a few days to the unfortunate incidence,
the deceased who was attending Omega Fire Ministry, was said to have put
a call to her pastor informing him of her failing health.
The pastor, it was learnt came down to see her and took the woman to
the hospital, where she was allegedly asked to be given blood before she
was taken back home by the benevolent pastor, along with the drugs
prescribed for her.
It was further revealed that the deceased before her death, she was
not having a cordial relationship with her mother, to the extent that
she distanced herself from the woman before and after she gave birth to
the new baby.
Another source also disclosed that why the woman decided to commit
suicide, was as a result of the medical report that confirmed her health
status a HIV Positive patient and decided to take her own life instead
of facing the disgrace and stigma.
The woman whose marriage produced a third child was advised by the doctor not to breast feed the baby.
When our correspondent contacted the Police Public Relation Officer,
PPRO, Mr. Ile Simon,he confirmed the incident, but could not say if the
husband of the deceased was detained.
However, the husband confirmed to Daily Post that he was detained by
the police soon after the incident but was released after the
interrogation.
He revealed that his late wife had tested positive to HIV/AIDS but could not say if that was the cause of her death.
The husband further disclosed that she was admitted at one of the
hospitals in Lokoja sometime in June, adding that he took her from the
hospital because he could not afford to pay the medical bill.
He narrated how he got to know the wife HIV status from a letter she wrote to him informing him during courtship.
He said as soon as the lady informed him of her status he went for tests in several places and the results were positiv
He further disclosed that his wife wanted to abort the pregnancy but
could proceed the act because he instill fear into her even as he
claimed that the first child is also infected.
He stated that the body has been released to family for burial.
